As Tuesday dawned residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered inhaling dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "severe" level.

Alarming Air Quality Measurements

Various sections of the city recorded an AQI above 500, which equals ten times the healthy threshold set by the World Health Organization.

Particular areas, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of 1800, representing 15-20x above safe levels.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and New Policy Shifts

Since 2020, the government had maintained a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the dangerous pollution that blankets the capital as winter sets in.

However earlier this year, the current city leadership appealed to the judicial authority to seek a modification of the restrictions.

The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – historically doubted by environmentalists as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a balance between "heritage and environment".

Court Decision and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of environmental and health campaigners, the court approved the proposal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during limited time windows throughout the festival.

Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive flouting of the regulated periods across the capital, with little regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Several recording stations throughout the capital recorded air quality spiking around midnight to the most severe readings recorded during celebrations in at least the past three years.

International Effects

The widespread use of firecrackers during Diwali also sparked a controversy with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to deteriorating atmospheric conditions in Lahore on contaminants traveling from neighboring India following the events.

Persistent Environmental Crisis

The dangerously high readings of air contamination in the capital have remained as a significant problem for more than 15 years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

Near celebratory seasons, the amount of dangerous particulate matter in the environment has been found to spike to seventy percent above the most severe readings ever measured in China's capital, which was previously considered as the planet's dirtiest city.

Diverse Pollution Sources

The problem in the city is attributed to a combination of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, building projects, garbage fires and pollutants from agricultural fires in nearby areas of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, farmers illegally ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, generating dangerous pollution that then gets trapped over the capital as winter air arrives.

Health and Economic Impact

The economic and health toll on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants calling home the capital region is substantial, according to numerous investigations.

The contaminated air leads to high levels of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing diseases, and can even lead to cancer.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be causing 10,000 early deaths per year in the capital.
