Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the right to question particular calls from the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
